6,666 vs. 6,236 Verses of Al-Qur’an

Most of people assume that Al-Qur’an consists of 6,666 verses. They do not estimate the total of verse by themselves but it was asserted by holy men (Ulama) who understood this case. Therefore, it became one of Islamic topic in a school that teachers teach the students. A question coming to our mind is “have we accounted it on our own?”

Some begin arguing about how many verses are exactly inside Al- Qur’an. Absolutely, they have accounted it before they publish what they discover. The verses of Al-Qur’an calculated by them were 6,236 verses which was far enough from the first total of verses, 6,666. “Is it a miscalculation?”

The opposite people who contend ‘6666’ as Moslem Holy Book Verses mostly come from academic area, such as students, lectures, and people having relation to academic. It is one of scientist ways to get the truth of knowledge. Descartes said that the way of getting a true truth is starting hesitating something. Another way is being critical to anything, though it is about religion ( Mustansyir, R. & Munir, M. 2013).

That the writer wants to convey to readers first before analyzing the verses is that one of Holy Men asserted 6,666 as the verse of Al-Qur’an is Ibn-I Huzeyme through a book titled “An Nasih wa’l Mansuh” to reveal Qur’an’s miracle of number. His reason why he asserted an opposite total of verse of scientific people written on the third paragraph is that :

  • There are 1,000 verses about wa’ad;
  • There are 1,000 verses about wa’id;
  • There are 1,000 verses about amr;
  • There are 1,000 verses about nahy;
  • There are 1,000 verses about information and stories;
  • There are 1,000 verses about prohibition and examples;
  • There are 500 verses about dominance;
  • There are 100 verses about prayer and glory;
  • There are 66 verses about nasih and mansuh;

Therefore, the calculation of verses is 6,666 verses.

(http://mu5lim.blogspot.com/2012/06/jumlah-ayat-alquran.html?m=1 accessed on Tuesday, September 9th 2014, at 22.00 WITA). However, there is no further information about the detail of versus included to wa’ad, wa’id, and other classifications above. Thus. It is still questionable.

Since my professor gave my friends and me an assignment to calculate the verses of Al-Qur’an, I discovered the following lists:

  1. 7; 2. 286; 3. 200; 4. 176; 5. 120; 6. 165; 7. 206; 8. 75; 9. 129; 10. 109; 11. 123; 12. 111; 13. 43; 14. 52; 15. 99; 16. 128; 17. 111; 18. 110; 19. 98; 20. 135; 21. 112; 289; 44. 59; 45. 37; 46. 35; 47. 38; 48. 29; 49. 18; 50. 45; 51. 60; 52. 49; 53. 62; 54. 55; 55. 78; 56. 96; 57. 29; 58. 22; 59. 24; 60. 13; 61. 14; 62. 11; 63. 11; 64. 18; 65. 12; 66. 12; 67. 30; 68. 52; 69. 52; 70. 44; 71. 28; 72. 28; 73. 20; 74. 56; 75. 40; 76. 31; 77. 50; 78. 40; 79. 46; 80. 42; 81. 29; 82. 19; 83. 36; 84. 25; 85. 22; 86. 17; 87. 19; 88. 26; 89. 30; 90. 20; 91. 15; 92. 21; 93. 11; 94. 8; 95. 8; 96. 19; 97. 5; 98. 8; 99. 8; 100. 11; 101. 11; 102. 8; 103. 3; 104. 9; 105. 5; 106. 4; 107. 7; 108. 3; 109. 6; 110. 3; 111. 5; 112. 4; 113. 5; 114. 6

I summed each total verse, then I found ‘6,236’ verses of Al-Qur’an.

However, there was ‘a crucial question’ coming to my mind after I discovered the last total. That is, the gap between 6,666 and 6,236 is too far. It is 340 verses. Thus, where do 340 verses come from? Is it a miscalculation? Did the holy men like Ibn-I Huzeyme fail in his Mathematics test because of wrong calculation? Let us analyze it.

In Al-Qur’an, there are two kinds of verses, namely tersurat and tersirat. Based on KBBI (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia) dictionary, Tersurat means ‘written’, While tersirat means ‘hidden’. The former can be found in Al-Qur’an, but the latter cannot be found in such book. Do 6,236 verses include in tersurat and 340 go to tersirat? If 340 verses are tersirat, is prophet Muhammad as the 340 verses or wahyu ?

Aisyah, one of Rasulullah wives, has ever been asked by someone about life style of prophet Muhammad. She asserted that he was a Al-Qur’an in action, a walking Al-Qur’an, a speaking Al-Qur’an, and a life Al-Qur’an. It means that what he said was from Allah SWT. What he conveyed is called Hadits. “Hadits Qudsi is tersirat verses.” (a personal conversation with Ust. Rozzi).

To strengthened the writer’s statement of “What prophet Muhammad said was from Allah SWT,” there are three verses of three Holy Books which provided below:

  • Taurat for prophet Moses/Musa:

Diutus kepada mereka seorang nabi dari tengah-tengah saudara mereka sepertimu (Moses), dan AKU menjadikan ucapan-KU dalam mulutnya, maka ia akan menyampaikan pembicaraan-KU kepada mereka dengna sedala yang AKU wasiatkan kepadanya (Ulangan 18:18).

  • Bible or Injil for prophet Isa:

Sebab Aku berkata-kata bukan dari diri-Ku sendiri, tetapi Bapa, yang mengutus Aku. Dialah yang memerintahkan Aku untuk mengatakan apa yang haruk Aku katakana dan Akuda sampaikan, jadi apa yang Aku katakana, AKu menyampaikannya sebagaimana yang difirmankan oleh Bapa kepada-Ku. (Injil – Yohanes 12: 49-50).

  • Al-Qur’an for prophet Muhammad:

Dan, tiadalah yang diucapkannya itu menurut kemauan hawa nafsunya. Ucapan itu tiada lain hanyalah wahya yang diwahyukan (kepadanya), yang diajarkan kepadanya oleh (Jibril) yang sangat kuat. (QS. An – Najm: 3-5).

Again, to make it as stronger statement, the writer formulated it in Silogisme (http://lenosa.wordpress.com/2013/04/29/logika-matematika-penarikan-kesimpulan/ accessed on Tuesday, September 9th 2014, at 23.00 WITA)

Formula :

Premis 1 : p ® q

Premis 2 : q ® r________

Kesimpulan : p ® r

Based on the formula above, (a personal conversation with Ninsari, S.Pd as one of Mathematics teacher at MAN 2 Praya).

Premis 1 : If Muhammad is prophet, Isa and Moses are prophets.

Premis 2 : if Isa and Moses are prophets, what the prophets say is from Allah___

Kesimpulan : if Muhammad is prophet, what the prophet says is from Allah

Thus, from three verses of Taurat, Injil, and Al-Qur’an and the result of silogisme formula, prophet Muhammad is one of wahyu from Allah SWT that is not tersurat, but tersirat named hadits Qudsi. Though hadits is actually ‘written’, it does not appear in Al-Qur’an contained tersurat verses, 6,236. What about ‘340’?

Muhammad is formed from four Arabic words, namely Mim, Ha, Mim, dal. Based on the sequence of Arabic words (see Appendix 1 and 2),

  • Mim is the 24th word ® the 24th surah ( An-Nur) of Al-Qur’an has 64
  • Ha is the 6th word ® the 6th surah (Al-an’am) has 165
  • Mim is the 24th word ® the 24th surah ( An-Nur) of has 64
  • Dal is the 8th word ® the 8th surah (Al-Anfal) has 75

The sum between number of Surah and verses total of each Surah is

24 + 64 = 88

6 + 165 = 171

24 + 64 = 88

8 + 75 = 83______ +

430

(http://mu5lim.blogspot.com/2012/06/jumlah-ayat-alquran.html?m=1 accessed on Tuesday, September 9th 2014, at 22.00 WITA). Thus, 430 is prophet Muhammad name because Muhammad himself is wahyu form Allah SWT based on what the writer has analyzed above. Muhammad is a walking Al-Qur’an like Aisyah’s assertion.

If you think that 340 represented Muhammad name is an accident, it is based on you as readers. The writer just tried to break ‘a crucial question’ among people who still want to know which one is true between 6,666 or 6,236. Where is your position between 6,666 and 6,236? Do you still want to say “there is a miscalculation of Ulama because they did not use a calculator long time ago?”

The writer asserted that either 6,666 or 6,236 can be the total of verses in Al-Qur’an based on the side of view of ours. If the verses inside Al-Qur’an are counted based on the quantity of verses appearing inside, it will be 6,236 verses. However, it can be 6,666 verses in case not only what appears but also what disappears on it.
